Americans are getting fatter. According to figures released Monday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the number of states with high obesity rates has swelled to 12 from nine.
More than a third of the adults in Alabama, Arkansas, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Texas and West Virginia are obese. Mississippi has the dubious distinction of having the higher rate at almost 36 percent.
