BET AWARDS WRAP UP: Here's What You Missed!

THE WINNERS

  • Alicia Keys, Trey Songz, Drake and Nicki Minaj were the big winners at the 10th annual BET Awards, which aired live from L.A.'s Shrine Auditorium last night.
  • Keys took Best Female R&B Artist, while Songz took the Male award. Drake and Nicki Minaj were named Best Male and Female Hip-Hop Artists, while Minaj was also named Best New Artist, topping controversial nominee Justin Bieber, who was unable to attend the show due to tour commitments.
  • Minaj made a point to thank Lil Wayne and called for "positive energy among women."
  • Other winners included Beyonce -- who took Video of the Year for "Video Phone" with Lady Gaga -- and Rihanna's "Hard," featuring Young Jeezy, which took Viewers Choice.

THE PEROFRMERS

  • Kanye West opened the show with his new single "Power." The rapper's performance had a biblical theme, featuring the rapper on a mountaintop with a cane.
  • Chris Brown finally got his chance to pay tribute to the late Michael Jackson, performing a medley of King of Pop hits including "The Way You Make Me Feel" and "Smooth Criminal." However, in an odd moment, Chris became so emotional as he began to sing "Man in the Mirror" that he broke down and cried and was unable to sing the words of the song.
  • T.I. chose the show for his first post-incarceration awards performance of his new single "Yeah You Know."
  • Keyshia Cole, B.O.B. and Eminem joined each other on stage for "Airplanes," which Em followed with "Not Afraid."
  • Monica did her cover of "Silly" by Denise Williams, who joined her on stage for the song.
  • Keys didn't let pregnancy keep her from wearing a short purple mini dress, as she performed a medley of her hits that included "Try Sleeping with a Broken Heart" and "If I Ain't You," on which she was joined by gospel favorite Kim Burrell.
  • Trey Songz performed "Your Side of the Bed" before launching into "Purple Rain" as Prince watched from the audience.
  • Ludacris closed the show with Minaj on "My Chick Bad" and also did "All I Do is Win" with T-Pain and Rick Ross.
  • Other performances included Diddy and Dirty Money, Usher, Drake and El DeBarge.

THE HIGHLIGHTS

  • Host Queen Latifah dusted off her rhyme skills in the beginning of the show, rapping about celebrities in the audience. Throughout the show, she revisited characters from her film career like "Cleo" in Set It Off and "Big Mama Thortin" in Chicago.
  • Nia Long and Larenze Tate recreated their characters in the '90s hit Love Jones.
  • Todd Bridges paid tribute to Gary Coleman, which kicked off a musical tribute to Teddy Pendergrass performed by Tyrese.
  • BET president Debra Lee presented John Legend with the Humanitarian Award.
  • Janelle Monae, Esperanza Spalding, Keys and Patti LaBelle were part of the musical tribute to Lifetime Achievement Award recipient Prince, who looked on with humility. He was presented by LaBelle and Chaka Khan
