I WANT MY TITHES BACK...Can you do that??

Tithing is a time-honored tradition, particularly in the black church. But one lady wanted her money back when she objected to a decision her church made.

Yvonne Moore not only quit Covenant Baptist in Washington, DC, she filed suit to retrieve a portion of the $250,000 she estimates she contributed over 40 years -- because of her objection to a same-sex wedding ceremony that was performed there.

  • Moore tells CNN, "I'm southern Baptist. The Bible speaks against that. You cannot take that in the church."
  • Pastor Dennis Wiley counters, "I don't think [black] people have a lock on civil rights."

Kenny ASKS?

  • Do you think this woman is right or crazy to sue for this reason? Should tithing be conditional?

I can see where she would be upset, however asking for your money back because you don't agree with a decision made by the church is harsh. How would she feel if her job asked for their money back because her job doesen't agree with a decison she made. Now what is she gonna give it back or say it is unfair. And two if she is this upset her tithes were not from the heart and I was told "the Lord loves a cheerful giver" so pray about it and move on. If you are strong in faith then set back and let the Lord work. He takes care of his children.

Wow Mahogany! You're really up on it! Thanks for the enlightening information you have presented! I am going to look that up about the government and church tithing. All I can say is it's a shame and a disgrace that it has come to this! The church is letting the world influence it, instead of the True Word of God!

The tithe is 10% of your income goes to the Lord. That is the whole point of giving tithes is to God and the church is supposed to represent God and be a fellowship of like Christians. I'm sorry that her church decided to go against Bible principles. She shouldn't continue her membership there, but Yvonne should just chalk her tithing up as what it is, an offering to God not to man, and leave it at that! Anytime you belong to a church that goes against Bible principles leave immediately!

tithing - A practice of giving a specific portion (traditionally 10%) of one's income for charitable or religious purposes.

Her tithe was a gift, not a loan. Yes, she is crazy for asking for her money back. When the money exits your hands it's no longer yours. Whether it's a church or a homeless shelter, the money then belongs to the organization to be used as THEY see fit. If she is not feeling the church anymore she should just move on to another.

How can you sue a CHURCH and sleep at night!
