Just days after Lil Wayne declared, "I don't like New York," an Empire State senator from Queens says he's "taken aback" and wants the New Orleans native to apologize for the statement. State Senator Malcolm A. Smith of Queens, NY, held a news conference on Wednesday to send a message to Weezy.
"If you don’t like New York," Mr. Smith said, according to The New York Times, "you don’t have to come to New York. You don’t have to sell your products here. And perhaps we won’t come to your concerts."
Wayne shared his distaste for the Big Apple after MTV asked him about his appearance earlier this month at Nicki Minaj's free show at Roseland Ballroom. Wayne had a good time at the concert, but he's said previously that New York has left a bad taste in his mouth. It was after a 2007 NYC show that he was arrested on gun charges. That incident led to his 2010 incarceration.
The legislative district that Senator Smith represents includes Hollis, which he points out "is essentially the home and the origin of hip-hop." Russell Simmons and his brother Rev. Run once called the area home. The senator says he's open to meeting with Lil Wayne, and hopes to include him in a discussion of "how to stop gun violence in our cities," according to The New York Times.
