Whitney Houston's family is slamming Lifetime's new bio-pic of the late singer. The film, titled Whitney, debuted Saturday night.

In a statement posted online, Whitney's sister-in-law Pat Houston called the film "dishonest and disrespectful." She accuses director Angela Bassett of trying to exploit her friendship with the late singer to get the movie made. "Misrepresenting the term friendship to advance an agenda is not only disrespectful and dishonest but a slap in the face to her true and loyal friends," she writes. "You should expect people will always rise to the occasion for prominence and profit – not love, respect or honor. "

Meanwhile, Black Twitter had plenty to say about the film, with the majority opinion being that it was indeed exploitive of the singer's legacy:

"I'm not even sure what story they were trying to tell in the Whitney movie. Seemed like they were just trying to exploit her catalog."

"The Whitney movie was lit like a Tide commercial. I'm tired of these Black film problems. I want new Black film problems."

"The only thing about this Whitney movie that's bothering me is they skipped mad moments of her life and keep showing her sniffing."

"This Whitney movie is low key ratchet."

The Angles:

Did you watch Whitney? Did you find it exploitive? Or good entertainment?

How did it compare to the Aaliyah movie?

Was the casting better? How about the acting?

Do you think Angela exploited her friendship with Whitney? Or was it inevitable someone was going to make this film?
