Local Buzz:
"Hit and Run Driver Leaves Victim in Critical Condition"

*NASHVILLE, Tenn.- Sunday night, Metro Police were searching the driver who hit a pedestrian in South Nashville and left the scene with no regard for the victim's well-being.
The victim is a 38-year-old man who was walking on Lutie Street around 7:30. Investigators on the scene were gathering evidence and questioning eye witnesses. Medics rushed the victim to Vanderbilt in critical condition. Trauma surgeons believe he is expected to survive.

"Mother Murdered while Children Present"

*COOKEVILLE, Tenn.- Police in Putnam County were busy this weekend investigating an apparent murder-suicide.
Investigators believe Ricky Mackie shot the mother of his children, Andrea Padgett, Saturday morning, while the two youngsters were strapped into Padgett's car, still running.
The shooting took place at Mackie's house on North Chestnut Street. Deputies say Mackie later shot and killed himself.

"House Fire Could Be Case of Homicide"

*Near Cookeville, Tenn. - Medical and dental records should tell investigators Monday whether the body found inside a burned house along Buck Mountain Road is that of Jennifer Smith's.
Neighbors watched the house Smith rented burn to the ground well before sunup Saturday. Investigators also recovered a badly burned, woman's body in the ashes.
"Nothing - nothing has ever happened around here like this," said neighbor Harold Harp. "I'd like to know whether Miss Jenny died in a fire, or whether she was killed. Ms. Smith. I would, I'd like to know who done it."
Harp noticed the bright, orange glow in the bitterly cold, early morning sky this weekend. He and his wife called for help, ran nextdoor, but never saw Smith, who'd rented the house in the community known as "Buck Mountain" for roughly one year. Neighbors describe Smith as quiet and private: a home healthcare employee known to return from work at 2:00 or 3:00 in the morning.
"This woman didn't deserve to die like this," Harp told NewsChannel 5 Sunday evening, as sheriff's investigators confirmed it was a case of homicide. "She was a good Christian woman, a fine neighbor. She didn't deserve to go like this."
Putnam County Sheriff David Andrews will not say what leads investigators to believe the death and fire were not accidental. And while he doesn't offer much in the way of suspects, Andrews is looking for an eyewitness - a passerby - who alerted a neighbor to the fire with an early morning knock at the door.
"And this witness left," Andrews said. "And we desperately need to talk to him, whoever it is. All we know is it was a male and it appeared to be a small car."
Jenny Smith's son, Christopher, said his mother would've celebrated a birthday on Monday. She had moved to the Putnam County community, right outside Algood and Cookeville, roughly one year ago from Mountain City, TN.
Smith had been the victim of a home burglary a few weeks ago, and the sheriff is trying to see if there's a correlation. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Putnam County Sheriff's Department.

"North Korea Calls for Peace Treaty Talks With US"

*SEOUL, South Korea "North Korea on Monday proposed talks with the United States to reach a formal peace treaty that would replace the truce that ended the Korean War 57 years ago, indicating it would not give up its nuclear weapons until Washington signed such an agreement.
North Korea said peace talks should be held either as part of the six-nation talks that focus on ending the North's nuclear weapons program or as a separate negotiation. But the North added that it would not return to six-nation talks” from which it withdrew last April " unless the United Nations lifted the sanctions it imposed following the nuclear and ballistic missile tests by the North last year.
"If confidence is to be built between North Korea and the United States, "it is essential to conclude a peace treaty for terminating the state of war, a root cause of the hostile relations, the North Korean Foreign Ministry said in a statement carried by the North's state-run news agency, K.C.N.A.
The statement reiterated that North Korea would not have built its nuclear weapons if the United States had assured it of peace.
In recent weeks, North Korea has attempted to shift the focus of six-nation nuclear talks, calling for improved ties and a peace treaty with Washington as preconditions for dismantling its nuclear weapons program. South Korean and American officials fear that adding new and complicated negotiations for a peace treaty might be a tactic by the North to delay its nuclear disarmament.
Stephen W. Bosworth, President Obama's special envoy on North Korea, visited Pyongyang last month to try to persuade North Korea to return to the six-nation talks. Both Washington and Pyongyang reported progress during Mr. Bosworth's trip but said more negotiations were needed before it could say whether the talks would resume.
On Monday, North Korea suggested that peace talks be held among the signatories of the Korean War armistice: the United States, China and North Korea. South Korea refused to sign the truce. But Seoul and Washington insist that any peace talks include the South.

"Josipovic Wins Croatia Presidency to Speed EU Talks

*"Jan. 11 (Bloomberg) -- Ivo Josipovic will lead Croatia for the next five years after winning a run-off presidential election as the former Yugoslav republic strives to complete European Union entry talks and revive the economy.
Josipovic, with the support of the largest opposition party, the Social Democrats, garnered 60.3 percent of the people’s vote, results from the central electoral commission in Zagreb published on its Web site showed. Zagreb Mayor Milan Bandic got 39.7 percent of the vote in yesterday’s election.
"When I announced I would run for president, I said I wanted a European Croatia,” Josipovic, a law and music professor, said in an interview with broadcaster Hrvatska Radiotelevizija, after the results were announced. "Croatia will be one of the shining stars on the European sky.”
The country, which aims to complete EU entry talks by June, must eliminate corruption and overhaul the judiciary and the shipping industries to become the next Yugoslav nation after Slovenia to join the world’s largest trading bloc by 2012.
Josipovic will have a largely ceremonial role when he takes over from Stipe Mesic in February with limited powers over the economy. He will be "a good counselor” to Prime Minister Jadranka Kosor and will "contribute to a quicker accession to the EU as he will spur other institutions to do their homework,” according to political analyst Damir Grubisa.

Good News:
"Plane arrives safely at Newark after landing gear failure"

Newark, N.J. - A United Airlines jetliner landed Sunday without one of its landing gears fully deployed after a frightening few moments for passengers, who were braced in the crash position before an "unbelievably smooth" touchdown that drew cheers.
All 53 people aboard got off the plane safely.
Flight 634 from Chicago was approaching Newark Liberty International Airport about 9 a.m. when the plane began ascending again, said passenger Paul Wasylyszyn of Chicago.
Then the plane began circling the airport, said Jim Falk of Middletown, N.J., who was sitting near the front.
"Normally a big plane like that doesn't do a bypass, so we knew something was wrong," said Falk, 40.
The captain came on the intercom, advising the 48 passengers that there was "an issue" with one of the landing gears on the Airbus 319 and that they were trying to fix it.
"They did a great job," Falk said of the captain and crew. "There was no yelling, screaming, panicking or anything."
The mood stayed calm even when passengers were instructed to prepare themselves for a crash, said Falk. He sent several text messages to his wife, who was on her way to pick him up, about what was happening.
Passengers braced themselves, Falk said.
They would land in three minutes, the passengers were told. And then:
"We went down the runway, however they did it," Falk said.
"If you didn't know they were missing a set of wheels, you wouldn't have thought there was something wrong," Wasylyszyn said.
Passengers cheered and sighed when the plane came to a stop, Wasylyszyn said. Then they hurried out through the emergency exits.

Relationship:
"JUST A TEASE?"
*According to a University of Texas poll, 64% of women admitted to "sexually teasing" a man. That is, they tried to make him think they would have sex, but had no intention of going through with it at the time ...
The motives varied, but a theme emerged: If she teases, she's probably interested in a future encounter ...
Here are the reasons the women gave for hitting on a guy:
69% -- Wanted to make him sexually interested.
52% -- Wanted to make themselves feel desirable.
28% -- Were joking or made a bet with friends.
22% -- Wanted to date him in the future.
7% -- Wanted to make him suffer.
6% -- Wanted to make his girlfriend angry.

A health note:
"TOO MUCH PERFUME = DEPRESSION?"
*Women who wear too much perfume might not know it because they're depressed. At least that's the conclusion of Dr. Yehuda Shoenfeld, a physician and autoimmune disease researcher at Tel Aviv University in Israel who studies "auto-antibodies."
"Our scientific findings suggest that women who are depressed are also losing their sense of smell, and may overcompensate by using more perfume," Dr. Shoenfeld said. He also thinks this could be why some men slap on too much cologne.
Questions??

Do you know someone who wears way too much perfume/colgne? How bad is it? Do you think the person is depressed? What perfume/cologne smell can you NOT stand?

Great thought of the day...

Women being teases? Who would've thought! That's why lots of women get their feelings hurt when a man plays games with them and make them look silly. It's simply that both genders play games but men are far less emotional if a woman's games are introduced than when a man introduces his games into the relationship. Just my opinion.

I would approach the North Korea issue with caution (extreme). It almost seems a bit too convenient and easy for them to willingly dismantle their nuclear program so suddenly. This seems like a sudden change of heart...almost to sudden. This is a definite chess move by the North Koreans.
