For the first time in nearly three years, a woman was put to death in the U.S. On Wednesday evening, Texas executed a woman who was convicted of stabbing her elderly neighbor to death in 1997.
Kimberly McCarthy was given a lethal injection at a state prison in Huntsville and at 6:37 p.m. local time, she was pronounced dead. Not only was she convicted of killing 71-year-old Dorothy Booth, she cut off her finger and stole her diamond ring, which she later sold at a pawn shop.

Despite her crimes, McCarthy had faith about the future. She said in her final statement, "This is not a loss, this is a win. You know where I am going. I am going home to be with Jesus, keep the faith. I love ya'll. Thank you chaplain." Her final words, as the lethal injection began to kill her, were: "God is good."
McCarthy is the 500th person to be executed since state capital punishment was re-instated in 1976, the 18th person executed in the U.S. this year and the eighth in Texas in 2013.
