State Representative Tim Scott, South Carolina's first black Republican legislator in a century, won the primary race for the state's Republican senate seat yesterday. Scott beat Paul Thurmond by a whopping 69-31 margin. Thurman is the son of Strom Thurmond -- the segregationist infamous for having an illegitimate black daughter. However David Bositis of the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies says the results of yesterday's poll don't necessarily speak to the state's racial progression. He tells the Nation, "It certainly is a changing country in a lot of places [but] South Carolina is not one of those places, not by a long shot."
