RACE: Pretty for a Dark-Skinned Girl?

Usher's ex, Tameka Foster Raymond, takes on the issue of skin tone in the African-American community in a Huffington Post article titled "She's Pretty for a Dark-Skinned Girl."

Tameka writes, "I was appalled when I heard a black woman refer to Michelle Obama as unattractive. The conversation turned into why President Obama picked her as his mate. No one in the witch-hunt made reference to the possibility that Michelle Obama was smart, funny, caring, a good person, highly accomplished or brilliant... I have read similar comments about myself -- that I am 'dark, aggressive, bossy and bitchy.' It has been stated that my husband should have been with a 'younger, more beautiful' woman. Astoundingly, the majority of the remarks come from African-American women and are mimicked by others."

Phone Topics:

* Do you think even African-Americans have prejudices against dark-skinned women? Where does that come from?

* Considering that the mainstream media has labeled Michelle Obama the new Jacqueline Kennedy, why do some
African-Americans find her unattractive? What do you think of her looks?

I am a mixed race woman, but I identify myself as black because that's what I'm comfortable with. That's really all I know. I have been mistakened for hispanic as recently as yesterday at the bank when the teller just began speaking to me in spanish. My skin is very fair and my sister is brown and I have envied her skin color for as long as I can remember but I have come to realize that I am beautiful just the way I am. Not so much for my complexion but for WHO I am. When people start loving themselves they will stop hating and judging others. When someone makes a negative remark about someone they don't even know, they should stop and ask themselves why they made the remark in the first place. That begins the journey of looking within yourself.

I think it is sick that in the African-American community we have not gone past this issue. We place so much on skin tone that we forget there are other important issues out there. I am a dark-skin female and growing up it was problem. Now I LOVE MY DARK SKIN; just as someone with a lighter skin tone would love there fair skin. As black people we are never gone to be satified until we get past this Light skin/Dark skin BS.

yeah, i saw this on ybf. i think she just trying to make her 15 minutes work for while she can. i say do what u gotta do. there's no need for discussion on the subject though. its not going to end. there will always be a racial divide within and outside the race. i dated this guy who said he would not data a dark girl. he is black as night but said two dark ppl together would not work. heck he said if i was any darker he wouldnt have dated me.
