POLICE BRUTALITY: Shooting Record to be Revealed in N.Y.

Yesterday the New York State appeals court ruled that police must turn over years of data identifying the race of victims of police shootings.

  • The findings could help determine whether police have a habit of shooting minority suspects at a disproportionately high rate.
  • The New York Civil Liberties Union requested the information following the police shooting death of Sean Bell -- the unarmed man shot after attending his bachelor party -- in 2006.
  • Over a three month period, from January 2010 to March 2010, more than $54 million was paid out in settlements and judgments for police misconduct related civil lawsuits, according to the National Police Misconduct Statistics and Reporting Project.
