Mark Ronson decided to add five new writers to the credits of “Uptown Funk” after The Gap Band claimed similarities to their record “Oops, Up Side Your Head.”
The Gap Band’s management initially filed the claim back in February, on the heels of the landmark legal ruling in the “Blurred Lines” case. Because of the precedent set by the judgement against Robin Thicke and Pharrell, RCA Records wasted no time adding the '70s musicians to list of the song’s writers.
The manager of Trinidad James, one of songwriters of "Uptown Funk," explained the decision, saying, "Everyone is being a little more cautious,” he said. “Nobody wants to be involved in a lawsuit. Once a copyright dispute goes to a trial, [if a jury is used], it is subject to be decided by public opinion — and no longer resolved based entirely on copyright law.” (TIME)
