Nearly two years after the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting spree tragedy in Newtown, Connecticut, more Americans are supporting gun rights over gun control. That's according to a survey by the Pew Research Center released on Wednesday.
According to the poll, 52 percent of those surveyed say that protecting gun rights is more important than gun control. Of the respondents, 46 percent said they thought gun control is more important. This is the first time in more than 20 years of the survey that more supported gun ownership over gun regulation.
According to the Pew report, "Support for gun rights has edged up from earlier this year, and marks a substantial shift in attitudes since shortly after the Newtown school shooting."
Following the Sandy Hook tragedy, more favored gun control, but that opinion has shifted since 2013, with those in favor of gun rights has risen from 45 percent to 52 percent.
The second anniversary of the shooting in which a gunman killed 27 students and teachers before turning the gun on himself is Sunday.
