The move to kinder and gentler political discourse in the wake of the Tucson shooting apparently hasn't reached Maine. The state's governor, Paul LePage, when pressed if he would attend events to commemorate Martin Luther King Junior Day, told a reporter that the NAACP could "kiss my butt." That phrase was part of a longer explanation in which LePage complained about being held hostage by a special interest groups and mentioned that he has an adopted son from Jamaica.
Yesterday, after a lot of public outcry, LePage attended a Martin Luther King Junior Day breakfast, where he didn't speak publicly. Meanwhile, the NAACP's MLK Day march drew hundreds of people, many who participated to show their displeasure with LePage's remarks.
