FBI joins the investigation of the killing of 3 Muslims over a parking space

The FBI said Thursday that they're joining Chapel Hill police in investigating whether the killings of three Muslims there was motivated by hate.

On Wednesday, U.S. Attorney Ripley Rand had said that there was no initial evidence that showed Muslims were being targeted. On Thursday, however, the FBI said it has "opened a parallel preliminary inquiry to determine whether any federal laws were violated."

Police in Chapel Hill are still saying that they believe the killings were motivated by a long-time feud over parking in the apartment building where the three victims and suspect Craig Stephen Hicks lived.

The three victims were mourned at a funeral Thursday that drew more than 5,000 people. The crowd was so large that the services, originally to be held in a mosque, were moved to an athletic field. (WCNC-TV)
