Family Guy TV Show: White Guys and Black Characters

A few eyebrows were raised last week when FOX introduced the cast for the upcoming animated series The Cleveland Show, a spinoff of its hit Family Guy. The show's title character is African-American, but the actor voicing "Cleveland" is the Caucasian actor Mike Henry, who also portrays him on Family Guy.

Henry says even though he's white, he doesn't think it's a problem that he's voicing a black character. Last week at the Television Critics Association's convention in L-A, he said, "I'm a sensitive person, and I think Cleveland is a very positive person. I know where I'm coming from. He's a sweet, well-intended nerd."

Phone Topics:

Is it appropriate for a Caucasian actor to voice an African-American character? Especially with so many African-American actors looking for work?

Who do you think would be a better choice for the role of Cleveland? Ving Rhames? Dennis Haysbert? T-C Carson from Living Single? Reginald VelJohnson from Family Matters?

Will you not watch this show knowing that a white actor is voicing Cleveland? Or does it not matter to you?

Do you like Family Guy? Or do you think it's racist at times?

My thing is why complain now. Family Guy has been on the air for years and no one complained. Now since The Cleveland Show has branched off from Family Guy is a problem that Cleveland's is voiced over with a white actor. This should have been brought up from the get. No one is white-washed, hell some of you didn't even watch the show and probably want. So it not going to make that big of a difference to you and all the nonwatching viewers now or ever.

I love Family Guy and I will watch The Cleveland show. I think the show is edgy at time they find humor in topic like race, class, gender, etc., but it really doesn't bother me because in my opionion they haven't completely crossed the line. On the other hand, I don't believe they should replace the white actor for a black actor just because the cartoon charter is black. I can see if it was a white actor (non-cartoon) in black paint portarying a black person then I would have a problem. For now I believe we should let it go.
