In a previously unheard of move in American politics, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump called on the Russian government Wednesday to find and release tens of thousands private emails belonging to his Democratic rival, Hillary Clinton.
Trump later added, "They probably have them. I'd like to have them released."
The emails Trump is referring to are from Clinton's stint as secretary of state, when she was using a private server that later spurred a federal investigation, but the FBI decided that no crime was committed.
These are not the emails from the Democratic National Committee that were leaked prior to the start of the party's convention, possibly by Russia. The FBI is investigating the hack and leak that led DNC Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz to step down. Trump was being questioned about the email leak when he made the comment about Russia finding Clinton's missing emails.
President Obama said Tuesday in an interview with NBC News that the Russians could be trying to influence the election. Obama said, "What we do know is that the Russians hack our systems, not just government systems but private systems. What the motives were in terms of the leaks, all that — I can’t say directly. What I do know is that Donald Trump has repeatedly expressed admiration for Vladimir Putin.”
