In a strong and passionate speech Wednesday at the Democratic National Convention, President Obama said that Hillary Clinton has the experience, demeanor and strength to succeed him in the White House.
Speaking of his former secretary of state, Obama said, "There has never been a man or a woman" more qualified to be president.
Obama added, "Until you’ve sat at that desk, you don’t know what it’s like to manage a global crisis or send young people to war. But Hillary’s been in the room; she’s been part of those decisions. Even in the middle of crisis, she listens to people, and keeps her cool, and treats everybody with respect.”
When not praising Clinton, Obama criticized Republican candidate Donald Trump, who he said is campaigning on fear and cynicism and is not fit for the job of commander in chief. Obama said that Trump isn't "a plans guy" or "a facts guy," adding, "He's just offering slogans and he's offering fear. He's betting that if he scares enough people, he might score just enough votes to win this election."
The president also took on Trump's "make America great again" slogan by saying, "America is already great. America is already strong. And I promise you, our strength, our greatness, does not depend on Donald Trump."
At the conclusion of Obama's speech, he was greeted by Clinton and the two embraced as the crowd cheered.
Clinton's running mate, Virginia Senator Tim Kaine also spoke Wednesday night and used the occasion to also lay into Trump, saying, "Our nation is too great to put it into the hands of a slick-talking, empty-promising, self-promoting, one-man wrecking crew."
Vice President Joe Biden also took shots at Trump during his time at the podium, saying that no nominee "has ever known less or been less prepared to deal with our national security."
