Did GOP Alter Obama's Redistribution Quote?

Democrats are charging that a 1998 audio clip talking of President Obama seemingly advocating redistribution of wealth was re-imagined by Republicans hoping to take the heat off presidential nominee Mitt Romney who told donors at a May fundraiser that he was essentially writing off the 47 percent of Americans who don't pay federal income taxes.

That revelation and others surfaced this week when liberal-leaning Mother Jones magazine posted secretly taped videos of Romney that the candidate has not repudiated.

The GOP hoped to counter with a 14-year-old clip of then-Illinois state Senator Obama in which he tells an audience at Loyola University, "I actually believe in redistribution, at least at a certain level, to make sure that everybody’s got a shot."

This proves, according to Romney and Republicans, that the president is committed to spreading around the wealth in what they say is Obama's support of a "government-centered society."

However, it seems, in context, that's not what Obama was saying, at least according to the full audio clip that NBC News obtained. Obama follows up his redistribution remark by asking, "How do we pool resources at the same time as we decentralize delivery systems in ways that both foster competition, can work in the marketplace, and can foster innovation at the local level and can be tailored to particular communities?"

Yet, Republican National Convention spokeswoman Kirsten Kukowski maintains that the first part of the clip is the "real" Obama based on the vast number of people who've gone on food stamps he became president and the unemployment rate remaining at over eight percent during the duration of his first term.

The tiny cotton undershirts were released under Beyonce's House of Dereon label, and are featured on the Obama for America website, along with designer goods from other fashion-forward Obama supporters including Tory Burch, Derek Lam and Diane von Furstenberg.
