They already have one platinum and two gold records plus a Grammy but De La Soul can now brag on a new accolade: Kickstarter record holders.

Posdnous, Dave (formerly known as Trugoy the Dove) and Maseo first announced plans to release a crowd-funded album about a month ago and quickly surpassed their initial goal of $110,000 in just a few days. De La's project has now raised nearly five times that, thanks to the support of more than 10,000 backers.

The overwhelming support has made the currently untitled album the second most successful music project in the history of the crowd-funding site. And there are still three days left to support the group and receive exclusive rewards, like limited edition vinyl, signed De La dunks and the chance to hang out over dinner with the group. Quickies:

•     Part of the reason they went to Kickstarter was because labels don’t want to pay for samples.  De La will use some of the funds to have musicians create a library of samples for their use.
•     A lot of other classic hip-hop acts will prolly have their hands out now.
•     Hip-hop doesn’t have a retirement plan. We need to support artists who gave us music we love.
