Another accidental shooting....but this time a mother gets hurt!!

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Metro police detectives said the stray bullet that hit a North Nashville mother of three in the neck Monday afternoon was intended for no one, that the incident was an accident, and that they might never pinpoint the person who was holding the gun.

Corey Mason, 34, of Adlai Drive, was in her kitchen making dinner when a runaway bullet penetrated the wall of her home. That bullet, likely from a small caliber gun, then entered and exited Mason's neck before penetrating two more interior walls.

"We went to the hospital, and then we came back home," recalled 5-year-old Jaqua Nelson, Mason's youngest child, who was standing only feet from his mother at the time of the shooting. "I was right beside her. She got on the floor, and I ran out the kitchen. And I started crying."

North Precinct detective Steve Jolley told NewsChannel 5 that the shooting incident was an accident. He said the bullet could have originated from a handgun, rifle or shotgun. Jolley said investigators canvassed and questioned the family in a house two doors down from Mason's, but that proved futile.

"Everybody is just nervous," Shannette Walker, a family friend, told reporters outside the house on Monday afternoon.

Walker said victim Corey Mason was treated at Baptist Hospital and released, and was in good spirits.

"We're a little, you know, messed up," Walker said, as the reality and shock began to sink in. "Our emotions are running high because, you know, we were scared. We thought the worst, but she's doing excellent!"

Mason's home, at 2410 Adlai, is for sale. Loved ones said it has been on the market for some time, but this brush with danger simply cinched the family's decision to move on.

"She's got kids," said Janice Richardson, one of the victim's relatives. "That could've been anybody! Could've been anybody getting hit with that bullet. That's nothing to play with! And this is a good neighborhood."
