Imagine having a family member with a mental disability and opening a bottle of Vitamin Water only to see "You Retard" printed on the underside of the cap.
That's what happened to one Canadian family with an 11-year-old girl with cerebral palsy and autism. So Doug Lokes of Calgary did what any sane parent would do -- he wrote a letter to parent company Coca-Cola complaining.
It turns out that it was part of a promotion in Canada pairing an English word with one in French. Retard in French means late or delayed. But nobody bothered to flag this particular combination, and the company was forced to issue a big apology. A spokesperson for Coke tells ABC News, ""This is certainly not an excuse in any way for what has occurred. We wanted them to know that this was in no way intentional and was a mistake on our part during the review process... This was a mistake during the review process, and we are taking steps to investigate and rectify the situation. We hope that our consumers can accept our profound apologies."
Unsurprisingly, Vitamin Water has cancelled the promotion.
