10 Things That Need To Happen To Stop Shootings In Nightclubs That Cater To YOUNG PEOPLE!

10 Things That Need To Happen To Stop Shootings In Nightclubs That Cater To YOUNG PEOPLE!

I have been working in Nightclubs since I was 16 years old.  My cousin taught me how to DJ at an early age and I rocked my first party in my teens!  With that, I have seen my share of violence inside and outside of nightclubs.  Most of the time it's due to mismanagement of the situation and/or the operation of the club.

But to say the building/nightclub is responsible is like saying a headache causes death.  No...the cancer causes the headache...and it's the cancer that causes death.

If you want to get rid of violence in nightclubs that cater to YOUNG people, you have to START with a few thing:(let me preface this by saying this is not a comprehensive list, but just a few items that will get you going in the right direction)

1)  Check/Frisk EVERYONE!  I don't care how long it makes the line!  Either you get checked or you go home...PERIOD! Each entry point must have a WAND screener as well and arrest EVERYONE that attempts to bring a gun in the club and force "11 - 29" on each offender in court - NO Exceptions.  Don't just send them off the property with a pat on the wrist!  LOCK THEIR ASSES UP on the first attempt!

2)  Invest in an "Airport Style" security screen gate.  Everyone walks under it.  If you are caught trying to go around it, you are escorted off the property and banned indefinitely.

3)  Upon hiring a security/enforcement person, have them sign a document informing them that if they are found to have allowed/cooperated with someone to get a gun into the club, they will be CHARGED as an accessory and that they will give police ALL of their personal information!

4)  1 security guard per 30 people.

5)  Also have a talk with your DJ.  If you play murder-murder, get money, what you looking at Ni**a, I'll kick your A$$ music all night long.  What do you think is gonna happen????  The DJ controls the temperament of the nightclub and needs to be entertaining as well as responsible.

6)  Create ZONES inside the club (at least 10) and have them managed "in teams" by security.  Lock Down the Building.

7)  Create a Zero Tolerance Policy on your rules.  Don't bend them because someone is a "Baller and spends lots of cash".  Put them out!  Them breaking your simple rules is a precursor to violent behavior.

8)  Post offenders pictures on the front door area or the Bathroom.  When you arrest someone, take their picture and post them on the "Wall of Shame".  Thugs hate to be embarrased!

9)  Post signs all around the entry points that "You will be arrested" and charged with criminal trespassing for violating club "security measures".  Trust me, once you arrest a few people and have them do the "Perp Walk" from your facility, it will curb the BS behavior.

10) Secure the building & Make Things Safe - Then get the money!  When you are focused on making money it hinders you from making the "Right Call".

Every nightclub that caters to a YOUNG CROWD should at a minimum make these kinds of adjustments to your operation.  Doing these things will curb the nonsense...and possibly save a LIFE!

@Ophelia...I won't be going back to Bentley's either. I didn't know anything about Legacy doing that on Saturdays. Thanks! I will definitely give that a try!

@AFrame, I totally agree with what you are saying. I had an opportunity to visit Club Cirok for the first time several weeks ago on a Friday for Old School Happy Hour and had the time of my life, but as the clock struck 9pm and soon after it was time to go. The music changed and you could see the entire atmosphere as well change, so I believe that the music does go hand in hand with how the atmosphere will be. Times are definitely changing I was shocked to learn that the Elks catered to the young people as they do. What happened to the elite? Bentley's before they relocated use to be a good spot to go out and enjoy yourself and now I wouldn't attempt to choose that as a place to go. I will say this if you are reading this post before Saturday, October 15th come out to Legacy Restaurant and Showcase for 3rd Saturday and you will experience an atmosphere for the Grown & Sexy 9pm until.
On another note, of course you can't blame the building and or nightclub it only houses the people; however the owners should be held responsible. They are responsible for the staff they hire and those of whom they employ, that will and do allow persons to enter their establishment with weapons. I have seen and heard it happen on numerous occasions. Yes ultimately, the person with the gun is responsible but the venue that will promote violence when they are careless and haphazardly allow individuals in their facility or upon the property with a weapon is also just as responsible and should be held accountable.

@DJ FREEZE...I don't know if Nashville can handle Both of Us on the Wheels!  You know how we used to KILL IT in Texas!

Nightclubs can either step up and change the game or customers can change where they choose to go for a good time. Some people test the laws of probability by being places where they KNOW they have no business being. Lets not forget that too. If you go to a club called the "OK Corral", chances are you're gonna get shot.

I don't think it's so much as people are blaming the music for people's actions. I think the argument is that the music in a club creates the atmosphere. That's why getting the best DJs is so important to a Club. That's what pretty much makes the club atmosphere first and foremost, is the music. And that is what draws certain crowds. I do agree with you on the dresscodes too. I believe that will help out a whole lot.

As for the music, DJ's are the "ringmasters". That being said, blaming the "music" for people's action is a bit unfair too. I can listen to "Planet Rock" and "Tear the Club Up" in the same mix but it doesn't wanna make me knock sombody over the head especially if I'm in my $300 suit and gators. On the other hand, if I'm 22 yrs. old with my jeans hanging off my ass with tims on with no sense of reality or responsibilty, a song might make me wanna stomp somebody out. The arguement is borderlining ridiculous. All the rules stated above go hand in hand and will work if you work it. But all the rules in the world are ineffective when folks don't have/use common sense. You can't change hood mentality but you don't have to invite the "hood" to the club. Create a classy enviroment, you'll have a classy outcome. Look at the picture above- how long do you think it would be before something bad happens there?

How about enforcing age and dress code requirements? Age can be kinda tricky because fake id's have been around since the wheel was invented but the dress code is definitely a tool especially in this day and time. Real old school folks with jobs and responsibities who just want to come out and have a good time put way too much effort into our appearance to be in a club filled with young folks dressed like thugs and hoochies waiting for some ignorance to jump off. Besides given the younger generation's mentality, 90% of the men don't even own a suit, much less a pair of slacks and some dress shoes. Sagging jeans, tims and tennis shoes have got to go! And if you're over 40 and you're still dressing like Lil Wayne and Soldier Boy, you need to be dragged out to the edge of town and stoned to death.

Kenny you know I love you as a DJ and I understand what you are saying. You have to cater to your crowd. I'm not critiquing you specifically...just the Nashville club scene for the REAL grown & sexy. My only complaint is that there really isn't anywhere that we can go to hear old school past 9 o'clock. On the weekends, I'm just now coming out of the house at 9 o'clock to go out, and by then all of the good music is gone everywhere.Even just a mix of music all night would suffice. I am around the age of the younger crowd that comes in later at the clubs, but I just can't stand all that rap all night, so I don't go. I went to Bentley's looking for "Grown & Sexy" and got rap ALLL night long. We even tried going to the Elks, which use to be pretty much Old School, and now the rap has taken over there too...the younger crowd throwing up gang signs all night long.

I just wish there was one night for the people that want to hear older music that doesn't have to stop at 9 o'clock. The clubs everywhere all weekend play the new school and rap music, so the younger crowd has a larger selection. But to sum this up, my wish is to hear a mix like the 92Q Saturday Night House Party type of music, 80's, 90's and 2000's all night. I do like some rap, and even that can be mixed up like LL Cool J (old school) and Rick Ross (new school). I'm a music lover, so I actually go out to clubs to enjoy the music and dance/groove, not just to throw up signs or shake my behind all night.
