Where: Belcourt Theater
Time: Midnight
Cost: $8.75
Description:
Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today to watch a former tool-calendar model rechristened Apollonia purify herself topless in the waters of Lake Minnetonka; to watch Morris Day groom himself in Jerome Benton’s mirror; to watch director Albert Magnoli stock a Smithsonian exhibit with ’80s glam fashions and mall hair and dawn-of-MTV visual overload (steam! strobe cutting! backlighting!). Above all, we’re here to watch a diminutive dandy in Victorian flounces, spitcurls and a purple palette come on like the biggest bad-ass on the planet — which Prince was in 1984, when his starring debut signaled he would lay waste to Hollywood just as surely as the movie’s soundtrack shattered the color line dividing rock and soul fans. It didn’t happen — although we’ll go to our grave insisting his widely despised follow-up Under the Cherry Moon is by far the better film — but we’ll always have the dynamic intro of “Let’s Go Crazy,” the undimmed brilliance of “When Doves Cry,” Lisa asking Wendy in her HAL 2000 voice if the water’s ready (“Yessss, Lisa …”), and the glorious jack-off guitar solo that climaxes the majestic title song. And now Al Gore can enjoy “Darling Nikki” without shame. It’s The Belcourt’s sure-to-sell-out midnight movie; be sure to watch for longtime Middle Tennessee resident Dez Dickerson, then The Revolution’s secret-weapon guitarist. The screening will also feature a costume contest, so prepare your ruffles accordingly.
2# Jul 25 Improv/Underground Jazz Show @ 948 35th Ave. N.
When: Sun., July 25, 4 p.m.
Description:
When we heard there was a monthly (every fourth Sunday) jazz house concert going on just a stone’s throw from TSU, we expected a few folding chairs in a living room. But when we checked it out last month, we were stunned to find that the basement home of the Improv/Underground series has the feel of a New York jazz club, complete with a lighted stage, candlelit tables, good acoustics and a warm, intimate vibe. It didn’t hurt that the band members — saxophonist Reagan Mitchell, keyboardist Paul Horton, spoken word artist Tracy Pendergrass, bassist Greg Bryant and drummer D.D. Holt — were tearing it up. Though the sun was high in the sky, we felt like it was 3 a.m. in an East Village after-hours club. Not only is Improv/Underground about the best way to while away a hot Sunday afternoon, it’s an oasis in Nashville’s jazz desert for local fans. This week’s edition features Bryant and Mitchell again, joined by blazing saxophonist Chris West (The Dynamites) and fabulous young drummer Marcus Hill, a student of drum legend Chester Thompson (Frank Zappa, Weather Report, Genesis, Phil Collins). The series is hosted by Bryant, Teree McCormick and Kandes Dungey, daughter of the late bassist and Nashville jazz legend Charles Dungey. (Bryant, by the way, also plays in my band from time to time, but don’t hold it against him — dude can play.)

A year ago, he was a struggling musician living in Conway, Arkansas. That's the way things are these days for Kris Allen, winner of the eighth season of "American Idol."
His debut album reveals the 24-year-old to be a three-dimensional artist who has recorded a consummate pop album. "What I wanted to show people more than anything is that I can write songs," says Kris, who co-wrote eight of the songs on his eponymous debut and also composed one song, "Red Guitar," completely on his own.
