The world's oldest person -- confirmed by Guiness World Records --  Misao Okawa, died today morning at 117 years old in Osaka, Japan. Okawa was born on March 5, 1898.

 

Okawa has lived in a nursing home since 1997. An employee at the establishment, Satoshi Yoshioka, explains to CNN, "She was a person with mild character, and loved to eat so much. Her favorite food was sushi and udon noodles." And on March 5 (of this year)? "She had eaten a lot of cake for her birthday."

 

"According to Guiness World Records, the oldest person ever was Jeanne Louise Calment, who died at age 122 in 1997," CNN reports.

 

Okawa leaves behind her three children, in addition to four grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
