Will.i.am Donates His Salary from The Voice UK to Prince Charles' Charity

Will.i.am got paid to be a coach on the U.K. version of The Voice, but the philanthropic artist isn't keeping any of the money.

On Twitter Thursday, the Black Eyed Peas frontman announced his decision to give "the majority of the money I made on the voice to the @PrincesTrust." That'll add up to a donation of close to $780,000 for the British charity, which is overseen by Prince Charles and helps give practical and financial support to disadvantaged young people.

The money Will is donating will be used, he says, "to build a tech program to get the kids from east [London] up to speed."

In a video of his meeting with Prince Charles, Will said that he "wanted to do with that money what I feel in my heart... to bring people up to speed in computer science and technology."

Having himself come from a disadvantaged neighborhood, Will.i.am said that for him, it was his family that made all the difference. "My family made sure I understood that getting a good education and hard work were key to turning my dreams into reality and beating the odds that come with growing up in a disadvantaged situation," Will said during the meeting at Buckingham Palace.

When the Prince remarked about how encouraged he was that Will.i.am would be living for a while in London, the singer made a play for an apartment at the Palace. Laughing as he pointed to the upper floors of the royal residence, Will.i.am joked, "They say you have a whole lot of empty rooms up there."
