Controversial North Korean leader Kim Jong Il died today, according to reports from state television from the North Korean capital of Pyongyang.

The North Korean leader had a history of health problems, including a stroke in 2008, and he was believed to have diabetes, heart disease and pancreatic cancer, according to reports.

Korean state media reported that Kim died of a heart ailment on a train. They attributed his death to "great mental and physical strain" he experienced on Saturday during a "high intensity field inspection."

Kim Jong Il rose to power after his father, North Korean founder Kim Il Sung, died in 1994. Last year, he introduced his 20-something third son, Kim Jong Un, as his successor.
