A Rutherford County woman has been arrested for allegedly trying to kill her five-year-old great-grandson and then attempting to take her own life.

59-year-old Mary Anthony Bennett, also known as Mary Bennett Williams and her great-grandson Isaiah Bennett were at their home on 8616 Hall Street on June 21st.

When Bennett's husband arrived at the house, he could not find his wife and great-grandson for a few minutes.

"(He) Found that the bedroom door was locked and when he got it unlocked he found Ms. Bennett, and the little boy Isaiah Bennett, unconscious and barely breathing," according to Dan Goodwin with the Rutherford County Sheriff's Office.

Once inside the room sheriff's detectives knew why the two were in such bad shape.

"There was a suicide not found there. We're not going to get into content or method," Goodwin said.

Paramedics rushed the woman and her great-grandson to Stonecrest Medical Center in Smyrna.

"And then the little boy was sent for advanced treatment at Vanderbilt Children's Hospital," Goodwin added.

Isaiah Bennett spent seven days in the hospital and was released on Monday.

Mary Bennett got out of the hospital the five days after she was admitted. Detectives quickly arrested her after she left Stonecrest.

Bennett was charged with attempted first-degree murder and aggravated child abuse. She was being held on $350,000 bond.

Bennett's first court appearance is scheduled for July 6 in General Sessions Court.
