Local Buzz:
"Smyrna student charged with sexual assault on bus"
*A 16-year-old Smyrna West student has been charged with aggravated sexual assault for an alleged incident on a school bus last week.
The high school student is accused of touching a 12-year-old Smyrna Middle female student on her breasts and private area "on top of her clothing,” said James Evans, Rutherford County Schools spokesman.
The charge was aggravated sexual assault because of the female student’s age, Evans said.
Juvenile Court Judge Donna Scott-Davenport has put the high school student on house arrest and has removed him from the school bus, according to Evans.
The incident occurred on bus No. 16 and camera footage shows the students horseplaying, but it doesn’t show the male student touching the female student because the camera angle is blocked by the bus seat, Evans said.

"Beet Juice To Be Used To Clear Tennessee Roads"
*NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - The Tennessee Department of Transportation will begin using beet juice this winter to help remove snow and ice from state roads and interstates.
TDOT said in a news release Monday that beet juice mixed with salt and salt brine will be spread at various locations across the state.
Beet juice is a byproduct of the beet after the sugar has been extracted.
The department is also evaluating the effectiveness of larger snow plows and some new tools for applying salt and deicing agents.
TDOT currently has more than 160,000 tons of salt and more than 1.1 million gallons of salt brine ready for use. The department has budgeted more than $12 million this year for snow and ice removal operations across the state.

"La Hacienda Catches Fire Tuesday Morning"

*NASHVILLE, Tenn. - A South Nashville restaurant on Nolensville Pike caught fire early Tuesday morning.
Just after midnight, a Metro police officer spotted smoke inside the La Hacienda Mexican restaurant and called the fire department.
After firefighters arrived on the scene, it didn't take them long to knock the small fire down.
Fire officials said the restaurant's grease pit had caught on fire, and La Hacienda could be back open as early as Tuesday.
The restaurant only suffered minor smoke damage.

"GM Extends Deadline For Michigan Transfer"

*SPRING HILL, Tenn. - Laid-off GM workers in Spring Hill have a little more time to apply to transfer to Michigan.
The deadline to apply for a transfer was extended until Dec. 23.
Eight hundred and forty workers were allowed to transfer to the plant in Michigan. As of the Dec. 14 only 728 people had applied.

"Toy Guns Replicate Real Threat"

*NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Police officers are trained to use deadly force, when necessary. In a moment, an officer might not have time to question whether the threat of a gun is real.
In October, robbery suspect Demian Rivera was shot by Franklin police after pulling a weapon on officers. Rivera was not killed in the shooting. His weapon turned out to be an AirSoft gun.
"He's an idiot, and he got exactly what he deserved. I mean, whether it was real, whether it was fake, whether he had bought a plastic handgun at Wal-Mart. If you're going to do something stupid, and put yourself in that situation, you're an idiot," said AirSoft gun handler Mike Collinsworth.
AirSoft gun dealers admit with realism comes responsibility and recognition that in a split second decision even a veteran police officer might not know the difference.
"They're extremely lifelike, very lifelike. That's one of the aspects that make them such a good training component for the law enforcement officials and the army," said Collinsworth.
Collinsworth owns and operates Bad Karma AirSoft Field in Lebanon, and the business has a flawless incident record.
If an AirSoft gun and plastic pellets are on your child's Christmas list, Collinsworth advises parents to always supervise AirSoft gun practice or play, carry the gun in its case - never have it out in plain view in public and finally, orange tip the gun to mark it clearly not the real deal.
Color marking your children's toy weapons is a law in some states, but not required in Tennessee.
Last year, State Rep. John DeBerry brought up legislation making it illegal for a minor to buy any toy gun without parental permission.
DeBerry's from Memphis where, two years ago, officers shot and killed a 12-year-old boy who wielded a toy gun.

"Woman dies in I-24 wreck at Harding Place"
*A 37-year-old woman died Monday when her car veered off the left side of Interstate 24 near Harding Place, collided with the median wall and then hit another car and tractor-trailer.
Two children, ages 8 and 9, were in the car with her but were not injured.
Eisha Manning may have had some sort of medical crisis right before the accident because one of the children said the woman appeared to have passed out before the car hit the wall.
After hitting the wall, Manning's 2001 Honda Accord traveled along the wall for several hundred feet and then veered across all four eastbound lanes and went on the entrance ramp at Harding Place, where it struck a 2003 Chevrolet Impala. The Impala spun into traffic where it was struck by a 1998 Kenworth tractor-tanker hauling animal fat.
The driver of the Impala, Christina Rose, 27, of Antioch, and her four passengers were not critically hurt.
The driver of the tractor-tanker, Eric Holcomb, 28, of Clarksville, was not injured.

"Woman Arrested After Trying to Give Inmate Bible"

*COLUMBIA, Tenn. - A Maury County woman faces criminal charges after trying to give a Bible to a Maury County Jail inmate.
Martina Mcgee was arrested on December 12.
Maury County Sheriff's Detective Jerry Williams said Mcgee inserted illegal prescription drug pills and tobacco in the Bible's binding.
Williams said an observant corrections officer caught the crime before the Bible was passed along to inmate Clifton Benderman.
"One of the corrections officers noticed the Bible felt strange," said Williams. "The ends were glued, but they could feel things in it."
Detectives charged Mcgee with Introduction of Contraband Into a Penal System and Criminal Impersonation.
Detective Williams said Mcgee also signed a false name when handing the items to jail officials.
"This is not at all surprising," said Maury County Jail Chaplain Jeff Boggs. "All it takes is finding one Bible that's packed full of tobacco, weed, pills, whatever, and you never look at a Bible the same."
Boggs said inmates often use Bibles to try and hide contraband.
Martina Mcgee was released from the Maury County Jail after posting a $5,000 bond.

"The White House has appointed its cyber tsar, following a seven month search."

*Howard Schmidt, a former eBay and Microsoft executive who advised President Bush, was appointed after others turned down the job.
Mr Schmidt has been set the task of uniting various disparate agencies and organisations to shore up the country's defence against cyber attack.
In May this year, President Obama pledged to personally appoint someone to the post.
In a letter posted on the White House website, John Brennan, assistant to the President for homeland security and counterterrorism said that protecting the internet was "critical to our national security, public safety and our personal privacy and civil liberties".
"It's also vital to President Obama's efforts to strengthen our country, from the modernisation of our health care system to the high-tech job creation central to our economic recovery."
Mr Schmidt would have "regular access to the President and serve as a key member of his National Security Staff", he said.
The White House's acting cyber-security head, Melissa Hathaway, stood down in August after complaining that the post did not allow her to implement necessary changes.

Celeb News:
"Carrie Underwood Is Engaged"

*NASHVILLE (AP) - Carrie Underwood is engaged. Her boyfriend, hockey player Mike Fisher of the NHL's Ottawa Senators, asked her to marry him and she's said "yes."
The couple has been dating for about a year. They haven't announced when they're getting married.
Underwood made it clear their relationship was serious when she went very public with her love for Fisher on the liner notes of her new album, "Play On."
She wrote "You are the most amazing addition to my life! You are such a wonderful person and have had such an amazing hand in the building of this album and in the growth of me as a person. I love you so much! You make my life better in every way!"

"BEYONCE, SOLANGE: "Sad" Over Divorce"

*As expected, Beyonce and Solange were hurt to learn their parents would be splitting up after over 30 years of marriage. A source tells Us magazine, "It's a rough time for the family -- especially over the holidays. The kids are sad, but it's been unraveling for some time." The insider says the divorce -- which Tina Knowles filed for in November -- was less about husband Mathew Knowles' alleged indiscretions and more about them just having "drifted apart" and leading "busy, separate lives. They will try to make it cordial. They put their kids first, and will still be around each other."
question??:Do you share the holidays with estranged family members? Is it awkward or a genuine gathering?

"USHER: Shoots VIP Ad"

*Although the release of his album Raymond Vs. Raymond has been delayed until next year, Usher is keeping busy. He recently shot an ad for his new Usher: V-I-P fragrance overseas. The decadent black-and-white clip depicts "Mr. Entertainment" making a getaway with a young beauty in an expensive sports car.
V-I-P won't make it into stockings this year, as it's not due in stores until 2010. But Usher -- who says the worst Christmas gifts he ever received were a pair of yellow suspenders and a crocodile yellow belt will surely recommend the fragrance as a present for next year.

"QWANELL "QUE" MOSLEY: On Day 26 Split"

*Qwanell "Que" Mosley has confirmed his split with Day 26, citing friction between him and the rest of the group that took place earlier this year and recently came to a head. Mosley tells M-T-V, "I have nothing bad to say about them. I just want to move forward because they sent me a letter saying they don't want to work with me... I only had the issue with management. I don't feel protected around them now. I don't feel safe. I don't feel like they're my brothers anymore.... This is my business and this is my life. I don't want to be kept in the dark."

Healthy Matters:
"Foot Care: Put Some Spring in Your Step"
*Our hands and fingernails are always out on display, only hiding now and then in winter mittens or gloves. We slather our hands with lotions and many women regularly paint their nails or get professional manicures. It's easier to neglect our feet, as they are often out of sight and sometimes out of mind.
In recent years, though, women and men alike are realizing how good it can feel to treat their feet with more tender loving care. Pedicures have nearly caught up to manicures in popularity, and previously timid toes are now being pampered and polished. While professional pedicures are widely available and reasonably affordable, you can also treat your feet to a home foot spa.
Prime your feet
Feet bear a lot of weight and are exposed to friction and pressure. They're also often wrapped up in socks or crammed into shoes. Tight, hardened, dry skin and calluses can develop in those conditions.
To prime your feet for pampering, first soak them in warm, soapy water. Drop a bit of scented oil into the water if you'd like - peppermint to invigorate or stimulate circulation, and lavender to relax. Take advantage of these stolen moments to flip through a magazine, read a chapter from a novel, or simply close your eyes and just be.
Once the skin on your feet is softened up, use a washcloth, loofah, or pumice stone to gently remove any calluses or dead, dry skin. Knead some lotion onto your feet, giving yourself a massage while you're at it. If you're feeling like spoiling your feet, you can try a "foot mask" to lock in the moisture.
Trim your toenails
With your feet now supple and soft, your toenails should be more yielding, too. Toenails need a trim every few weeks. To prevent ingrown toenails, foot experts advise that nails be trimmed straight across. And keep your toenails trimmed to just beneath the edge of your toe. Too long or too short, and they can become ingrown or infected.
The cuticles can also be sensitive and vulnerable to inflammation, so don't cut or push them back. To clean under the nails, use soap and a nail brush or an orange stick. Hard metal tools are too rough. Be gentle.
Spa safely
If you choose to take your toes to a pro, be aware of spa safety. Salons have health codes they must follow, but businesses get lazy and, well, busy. Sometimes health and safety may fall to the wayside. Fungal and bacterial infections from whirlpool foot baths do happen.
When you're waiting your turn for a pedicure, watch and see if the salon's foot spa is drained, washed, and disinfected between customers. Take a look around the salon or spa. Does it seem clean and tidy? Ask the staff how the foot spas are cleaned. If they won't tell you, that's a good sign that you might want to get your feet out of there.
Don't shave or wax your legs within 24 hours of your pedicure or foot spa. Open or irritated skin can be welcome infection. Likewise, if you have cuts, scratches, scabs, rash, or insect bites on your shins, ankles, or feet, wait until you're all healed up to treat your feet to a professional foot spa and pedicure. If after a pedicure you develop any skin problems in those areas, contact your doctor.

RELATIONSHIPS:
"Fixing Family Problems During the Holidays"
*Tiger Woods isn't the only person who is dealing with family problems this holiday season. Plenty of families are dealing with plenty of bad blood.
Resolving conflict can take time, and some bonds may remain broken despite a person's best efforts. But, could the holiday season get-togethers be a good time to work toward smoothing things over?
Here are some ways to family gatherings enjoyable -- not just tolerable:
Keep Things Simple -- If you're planning a gathering, keep the details simple. Consider how you can make it work with the least amount of stress on yourself and others.
Lower Your Expectations -- People don't have to change for you to be happy.
Listen -- Make a point to be a better listener. Hear a person's words, notice their emotion, keep eye contact and put yourself in their shoes.
Laugh -- Keep your sense of humor. Among our differences and imperfections, it's a miracle we all get along as well as we do.
