"Grinch Steals Christmas Gifts From Woman's Trunk"

*COLUMBIA, Tenn. - A Grinch of a crook tried to steal the Christmas spirit from one family in Columbia.
Last week, Angie Chansuolme's car was one of eleven broken into near Wedgewood Drive. The thief cut through the convertible top, popped the trunk and took more than $600 worth of Christmas presents. "It makes me upset. I mean it was the kids stuff," said Chansuolme.
The single mother had bought gifts for her two daughters and nephew.
"It was for their Christmas. They didn't do anything to anybody," said Chansuolme. Columbia Police detectives are investigating the crimes.
Sergeant Wayne Prince said 80 percent of car break-in victims are targeted because they leave their cars unlocked, but Chansuolme locked her car.
"She took the precautions. It just didn't work for her," said Prince.
The Chansuolme family will not let the incident ruin their Christmas. Her family and friends will chip in to purchase the children's gifts.
"I mean it definitely makes you appreciate [Christmas] more this year," said Chansuolme.
If anything, the family said this Christmas will be more memorable.

Cheryl Bates Lee, the TSU public information officer, said the robbery took place near an academic building on campus and not a residential area.

The two pulled a gun on him, took the money and left. The incident is still under investigation.

Police do not know what caused Willis to cross the line. Both drug and alcohol tests came back negative.

"Winds flatten state Christmas tree"

*The Christmas tree at the state Capitol will be replaced after being toppled by high winds overnight.
The blue spruce, which had stood on Charlotte Avenue between the Capitol and Legislative Plaza, fell sometime before 4 a.m. Wednesday, snapping off the top, said Kenny Crowson, facilities supervisor at the Capitol. Officials believe the tree was blown over by high winds. The tree fell to the sidewalk, damaging some lights and ornaments, but no one is believed to have been injured.
Capitol staffers are looking for a replacement for the tree, which had been donated to the state, Crowson said. Vandalism is not suspected.

President Obama Accepts Nobel Peace Prize

*U.S. President Barack Obama has formally accepted the Nobel Peace Prize at a ceremony in Oslo, Norway. The president spoke at length about the circumstances that push nations to war, and prompt them to seek peace.
President Obama says he accepts the peace prize with humility, well aware of the controversy that surrounded the choice of the Nobel Committee.
"In part, this is because I am at the beginning, and not the end, of my labors on the world stage. Compared to some of the giants of history who have received this prize - Schweitzer and King; Marshall and Mandela - my accomplishments are slight," he said.
But he says the most profound issue surrounding the award is the fact that he is the leader of a nation in the midst of two wars.
"We are at war, and I am responsible for the deployment of thousands of young Americans to battle in a distant land. Some will kill. Some will be killed," he said. "And so I come here with an acute sense of the cost of armed conflict - filled with difficult questions about the relationship between war and peace, and our effort to replace one with the other."
He says there is nothing weak in the path of non-violence championed by the 1964 Nobel Peace Prize winner, Martin Luther King, Jr. Yet Mr. Obama says it cannot be the only path. He says he cannot stand idle in the face of threats to the American people.
"A non-violent movement could not have halted Hitler's armies. Negotiations cannot convince al Qaida's leaders to lay down their arms," he said. "To say that force is sometimes necessary is not a call to cynicism - it is a recognition of history; the imperfections of man and the limits of reason."
His speech to a crowd of dignitaries in Oslo's city hall came just nine days after he ordered another 30,000 American troops to Afghanistan. Well aware of the juxtaposition of events, the president focused on the notion of "just war", and the concept of sustainable peace.
"We must begin by acknowledging the hard truth that we will not eradicate violent conflict in our lifetimes," said Mr. Obama. "There will be times when nations - acting individually or in concert - will find the use of force not only necessary but morally justified."
He echoed the words of former U.S. President John Kennedy, who five decades ago spoke of a realistic, more attainable peace.
President Obama said rules and institutions are needed to keep military action in check. He made specific mention of the need to adhere to strict codes of conduct, and to see that countries live up to their international obligations.
"Those who claim to respect international law cannot avert their eyes when those laws are flouted. Those who care for their own security cannot ignore the danger of an arms race in the Middle East or East Asia," he said. "Those who seek peace cannot stand idly by as nations arm themselves for nuclear war." President Obama went on to speak about nations that abuse their own people. He said peace must be more than the absence of military conflict.
"So even as we respect the unique culture and traditions of different countries, America will always be a voice for those aspirations that are universal," added Mr. Obama. "We will bear witness to the quiet dignity of reformers like Aung Sang Suu Kyi; to the bravery of Zimbabweans who cast their ballots in the face of beatings; to the hundreds of thousands who have marched silently through the streets of Iran."
He said the search for peace must entail support for strong institutions, human rights and freedom from want. But he said there is one other key ingredient for a more peaceful world. " I do not believe that we will have the will, or the staying power, to complete this work without something more - and that is the continued expansion of our moral imagination; an insistence that there is something irreducible that we all share," he said.
In announcing its choice for the 2009 Peace Prize, the Nobel Committee cited the president's efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation. It said he has captured the imagination of the world with his message of hope. All the same, the award has been criticized as premature by some, and public opinion polls in the United States indicate many Americans believe the honor is coming far too early. As the president began his Oslo visit, a group of Norwegians made the same point. They gathered outside the Nobel Institute while the president was inside signing the guest book. They chanted and cheered and held up a yellow banner that said "Obama you won it, now earn it!"

"Gunmen hold 57 in Philippines, free children"

*MANILA (Reuters) - Philippine negotiators put off until Friday talks to secure the release of 57 people taken hostage by armed mountain tribesmen from a school in the troubled southern region of Mindanao.
The raid was carried out less than three weeks after a massacre in a nearby province in which 57 people were killed, throwing an unwelcome spotlight on the Southeast Asian nation and raising tensions ahead of presidential elections next year.
The hostages were being held in a remote forested area near the town of Prosperidad in Agusan del Sur province. Police said the gunmen had seized 75 people, but later freed 18, including all 17 children.
Authorities described the gunmen as former members of a civilian militia who had taken to banditry. Some officials said they could have taken hostages because they were being pursued by police after a gunbattle with a rival tribal group on Wednesday.
Other officials said the group was demanding the dropping of cases against them, action against the rival group and media coverage.
Negotiators had left the mountain site to return to town and would resume talks on Friday, officials said.

Healthy Matters:
"How Blood Sugar Alters Your Mood"

*The best way to cope with holiday stress and obligations is to keep your mood and energy stable. You'll not only feel better, but will be much less likely to overeat. "Choosing foods that your body absorbs slowly keeps blood sugar steady, maintaining your feelings on an even keel," says Elizabeth Somer, RD, author of Food & Mood. Slow-digesting foods include whole-grain cereal with milk, brown rice with salmon or chicken breast, a peanut butter sandwich on whole-wheat bread, or a spinach salad and half a turkey sandwich with milk. You want to eat either quality carbohydrates or carbohydrates mixed with protein, she says.
Foods that absorb quickly, such as sugar, white bread, or anything refined, spike blood sugar high; then cause it to suddenly crash. After a crash, you'll feel crabby and hungry, and end up grabbing chocolate bars or candy -- setting yourself up for yet another blood sugar dive, Somer says.

Good News:
"Boy Collects 1000 Socks For Needy Kids"

*Consider what life without socks would be like. That's what 11-year-old Tanner Eaves is asking everyone in the Lake Mary, Florida community, as he collects socks for needy children this holiday season, The Orlando Sentinel reports.
Reasoning that socks were more recession-friendly than the purchase of toys, Tanner's already collected more than 500 pairs, and is due to collect more by his Dec. 14 deadline. Days after Halloween, Tanner created a flier and canvassed local businesses to promote the sock drive, which he plans to make an annual event.
He asked his school, Heathrow Elementary, for help, too, via a schoolwide broadcast about his project.
"You would get nasty blisters all the time," the fifth-grader wrote in a letter to his school administrators to get permission for the announcement. He concluded: "Wouldn't it feel nice if you were one of those less-fortunate kids and you woke up Christmas morning and had a nice, warm pair of cozy socks in your stocking (which, by the way, is also a sock) instead of the smelly, itchy ones you have now?"
-Tanner's first charity donation was six years ago, when he declared he wanted to donate toys to abused and needy children at the Children's Home Society. He noticed that many of the children has mismatched or too-small socks, so most of the socks collected during the drive will go to the Children's Home Society.

RELATIONSHIPS:
"Reasons To Date A Guy Who Lives With His Parents"

*Is it a deal breaker for a guy to live with his parents? Even if he's good looking, hard working, kind and funny?
If you meet a guy like this, you might want to look on the bright side of life. According to the relationship blog Your Tango, dating an adult male who still lives with mom and dad actually has some perks, including:
1. Clean Laundry -- Young, single guys are notoriously bad at keeping up with the laundry, which means ... they stink! Guys who live with parents have mom to take care of keeping them clean and respectable.
2. Less Competition -- Reality check ... a 28-year-old guy who still lives at home isn't exactly a hot commodity. So what? This means there will be fewer women hounding him.
3. Good Food -- A guy who lives with his parents will more than likely spend the morning eating the great food his mom prepared and less likely to hit a fast food drive thru. Enjoy those homemade banana pancakes!
4. Money Saved -- A guy who lives at home is saving money on rent, which can be put toward longer-term objectives, like graduate school or his own house. Or it can be spent on you. None of these options is a bad thing.
Have you ever met the absolute PERFECT MAN... except for one thing? What was that one thing? Did you ever get past this single flaw?
What's the bare minimum you need from a guy? Employed? Able to hold a conversation? Has a pulse?

HOT MESS OF THE DAY:
"Father Doesn't Know Best"

"We're all for fathers spending time with their daughters, but not if this is what they're going to teach them!"

Thought for the day:
"Be carefull of the last words that you use because the next ones may be to get you out of trouble." ~DLA

President Obama walked into Oslo on a tightrope and performed masterfully. This is not a jump on the bandwagon type praise...I really do admire the way that he handled the position that he was placed in by accepting the Nobel PEACE prize, yet remaining commander in chief of the United States. Well Done Mr. President.

The people that abused their child really have some issues. I hope they get help beyond the prison time. Trouble with prison time is that they can do the time, get out and have kids all over again. Then the cycle just repeats itself.

The relationship advice for women always cracks me up! I'm a 28 year old guy and some stuff I agree with and some stuff I don't. Ladies if you really want to know about guys...make sure that the information comes from a GUY! I couldn't imagine getting all of my advice about women from men. Men are one track creatures most of the time and would definitely not give the best advice. That's why so many women get disappointed when they read essence, woman's world, vanity fair, etc... These are women's magazines usually giving women advice on how men think...not a good combination if you ask me.

Much respect to Dr. Ralph Bunche, he was a visionary and doesn't (IMO) really get the recognition that he and his legacy deserve.

I'm so sick of hearing about Tiger Woods...please MEDIA OUTLETS move on!

It's really sad that the lady had her car broken in to and her presents stolen. Insurance should cover it, and maybe she'll even come out better than before.
