"Robber Smashes SUV Into Covenience Store"
*NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Police continued to search Friday morning for a suspected robber, following a smash-and-grab at a convenience store late Thursday night.
Police said around 11:30 p.m. a man rammed his Ford Explorer into the AM PM Express on Nolensville Pike at Bradford Hills Drive.
Then the robber ran into the store and stole some items before fleeing the scene.
*NASHVILLE, Tenn. - District 5 Councilwoman Pam Murray has unofficially lost her seat in a special election on Thursday to Jamie Hollin.
Murray has been the East Nashville district councilwoman since 2003, and she faced off against challenger and petition organizer Jamie Hollin.
The unofficial ballot total had Hollin with 541 votes and Murray with 538 votes. The four provisional ballots will be counted on Friday, and the official winner will be named Friday around 9:30 a.m.
More than 1,000 of Murray's constituents signed a petition calling for a recall election, claiming she didn't perform her duties. A NewsChannel 5 Investigation found Murray also held a job in Detroit, Mich.
Election officials said there are about 6,000 registered voters in District 5. Out of those 6,000, 295 people participated in early voting.
The Metro Election Commission said the historic election is costing tax payers $12,000.
The winner of the District 5 metro council seat will hold the office until September 2011.
*NASHVILLE, Tenn. - More can be learned about the Metro Parks Department's major cuts Friday.
Board members said they would reveal their final decisions about the number of jobs that will be cut and potential closings.
The department has a $1.7 million budget shortfall, and to balance the budget, 29 positions could be cut.
Other ideas include closing Shelby and Warner golf courses for the winter, as well as shutting down The Beaman Park Nature Center.
Community Centers like Cleveland, Kirkpatrick, Mcabe, West and Watkins could close, and hours could be cut at Fort Negley and the Two Rivers Mansion.
"Lawyers: Colo. balloon boy parents to plead guilty"
*FORT COLLINS, Colo. — The Colorado couple accused of pulling a spectacular hoax by reporting their son was aboard a runaway balloon is set to avoid more spectacle — and a trial — by entering pleas to charges that could bring some jail time and probation.
Richard and Mayumi Heene were to appear in court Friday. Richard planned to plead guilty to a felony charge of attempting to influence a public servant and Mayumi to a misdemeanor charge of false reporting, according to Richard's attorney, David Lane.
The pleas would be part of an agreement to avoid possible deportation of Mayumi Heene to her native Japan should she be convicted in court of greater charges, Lane said. Sentencing will be at a later date.
The agreement would spare the Heenes maximum prison time. Richard Heene could get up to 90 days in jail and Mayumi up to 60, Lane said.
Without the deal, the charge against Richard Heene, 48, carries up to six years in state prison and a fine of up to $500,000. The charge against his 45-year-old wife carries a six-month jail term and a maximum $750 fine.
Mayumi Heene's attorney, Lee Christian, said he expects her to serve any jail time in a work-release program that would involve some detention and some time at home.
Lane said the Heenes' children, ages 6, 8 and 10, would remain in the parents' custody under what he called a "package deal" that was compelling his client to enter a plea. Richard Heene has denied any hoax, though Mayumi Heene allegedly confessed it was a stunt to drum up publicity for the family — and that the boys were told to lie about it all.
"He feels like he's got to do what he's got to do to save his wife from being deported," Lane said of his client.
CELEBS:
"Pictured: Battered and bruised photographer who claims he went a round with former boxing champ Mike Tyson"
*With his head encased in a bandage, and a grim look on his face photographer Tony Echevarria certainly looks just like a man who has gone one round with former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson.
The former heavyweight boxing champion was arrested at LAX airport after allegedly brawling with the photographer.
And there certainly is proof that the photographer was subject to a beating as a picture of him without a bandage shows the snapper's head with what looks like an imprint of fingers on his dome.
A source told the Los Angeles Times Tyson told police the photographer struck him in an attempt to provoke him, while the paparazzo claimed the boxer punched him in the face and tried to take film from his camera. But LA police have yet to clarify the exact details of the incident.
'There's a lot of different versions to the story,' Los Angeles Airport Police Sergeant Jim Holcomb said.
'That's all going to come out later. But in this particular case, both individuals are going to be pressing charges for battery.'
'I've heard people were following him into the men's room and trying to take his picture there,' claimed Tyson's defence attorney, David Chesnoff.
'My advice to him is going to be to vigorously press charges against what everyone agrees are ridiculously aggressive photographers.'

"Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today 2 get through this thing called life ...”
... and thus begins one of the greatest pop culture phenomena of our time.
Back in the summer of 1984, Purple Rain was more than just a movie: it was a genuine experience, a transcendent multi-media event that celebrated commercialism and creativity in equal measure, turning a mid-level R&B singer into an overnight superstar and international sex symbol. At one point during that year, Prince had not only the Number One movie in America, but also the Number One album and the Number One single. In fact, when Purple Rain entered the album chart at peak position on August 4th of 1984 (displacing Bruce Springsteen’s Born in the U.S.A., of all things), it wouldn’t vacate that spot until January 19th of the following year.
Yet all these accomplishments wind up leading us to one very simple question: why?
The truth of the matter is simple: Prince picked the perfect time to perfect his art. Though unfairly relegated as a straight-up R&B singer for his first few years, a few people could already pick out the fact that the barely 20-years-old Prince Rogers Nelson had talent that wasn’t exactly easy to classify: aside from the fact that he played every instrument on every album he ever produced, his mixture of genres was remarkably unconventional. 1979’s Prince had numerous hard-rock overtones, and the genre-busting 1980 disc Dirty Mind was a lo-fi explosion of new wave, classic rock, and synth-based soul experiments. With 1982’s 1999, however, Prince had finally found a way to meld his experimental pop tendencies with more "commercial” song structures, resulting in the first two major mainstream hits of his career (the title track and "Little Red Corvette”). Each become substantial radio staples at the expense of absolutely nothing: Prince’s sexually-charged lyrics—always a point of controversy—were still kept front and center, pushing the envelope of what was considered "acceptable” radio play without compromising Prince’s increasingly-insular artistic vision.
*Retired Air Force Colonel James Hivner’s F-4 Phantom was shot down in Vietnam 44 years ago . Once captured, the Viet Cong stripped him of all personal items, including his wedding ring. For the next seven and-a-half years as a prisoner of war Hivner says his faith and thoughts of his family kept him hopeful."Before I went to sleep I tried to pray, and in the morning, because we were about 12 hours apart, and I'd be thinking 'When I'm going to bed they're just getting up.'"He was released in 1973, but he had to leave his wedding ring and dog tag behind. He never expected to see the items again, but last month was notified by the Air Force they had been retrieved. On Wednesday at the Cavanaugh Flight Museum in Addison, Texas, Hivner was given his wedding ring, and it still fit! "This is just a great day for me, for my wife, for my family… This ring made a full circle, from here to Vietnam, and eventually back.”Hivner's wife Phyllis was especially grateful, "I truly thank you so, so much for this. You've just blown my mind with this."
