"Sale Of Animals On Side Of Roads Is Now Illegal"

*NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Selling dogs, cats and other domestic animals on the side of the road has now been made illegal in Nashville.
The practice has been common in places like Gallatin Road in Rivergate and Nolensville Road.
Wednesday night, the Metro council voted unanimously to ban the outdoor sale of animals as well as even giving them away with some exceptions.
Those exceptions include people selling or giving away pets at their homes or businesses and nonprofit organizations whose main purpose is the care and adoption of animals. Along with dogs and cats, the law is designed to protect chickens, rabbits, hamsters and many other animals.
Councilwoman Karen Bennett said sometimes people who take accept pets informally don't know if they have been properly vaccinated or treated.

"Tennessee Nursing Homes Rank Low"

*NASHVILLE, Tenn.- A new report shined a shameful spotlight on nursing home care in Tennessee. Tennessee ranks near the very bottom among other states, according to a local newspaper. Just four other states ranked worse than Tennessee.
Around 52 long-term homes in Middle Tennessee have one or two star ratings, according to Medicare's web site. Those ratings mean those homes are below average or much below average. Medicare's web site even stated, people need to keep in mind these inspections cover a short span of time. They can either get much better or worse very quickly. A local newspaper reported, the low rankings were due to the fact that Tennessee has one of the lowest staffing requirements in the United States. Tennessee ranks 5th worst in the country for long-term care. Among 319 nursing homes in the state, roughly 60 percent received just one or two stars. Last year, Tennessee nursing homes ranked 3rd worst.

" Obama Says Senate May Drop Cap and Trade, Pass Energy-Only Bill"

*President Obama acknowledged yesterday that the Senate may pass an energy bill this year without the cap-and-trade component he has long put at the center of his environmental agenda. Speaking at a town hall meeting in Nashua, N.H., Obama repeated his call for a price on greenhouse gas emissions but said he recognized that such an approach may not have the votes to make it into law. "The only thing I would say about it is this: We may be able to separate these things out," Obama said. "And it's conceivable that that's where the Senate ends up. But the concept of incentivizing clean energy so that it's the cheaper, more effective kind of energy is one that is proven to work and is actually a market-based approach." Senate moderates from both parties are pushing Obama to accept an energy-only approach without putting a price on carbon emissions the way the House-passed bill (H.R. 2454 (pdf)) does, including Agriculture Chairwoman Blanche Lincoln (D-Ark.), Budget Chairman Kent Conrad (D-N.D.), and Sens. Byron Dorgan (D-N.D.) and Judd Gregg (R-N.H.).

"Blast in NW Pakistan Kills 7, Including 3 US Troops"

*A roadside bomb in northwest Pakistan has killed three U.S. soldiers and four others traveling to the reopening ceremony of a girls school recently renovated with U.S. assistance. Pakistani officials say at least three children died in the attack and more than 60 people were wounded.
The bomb exploded in a village in the Lower Dir district near Swat Valley, a region the Pakistani military says was largely cleared of militants in an offensive a year ago. A statement from the U.S. Embassy in Islamabad said the American military personnel were part of an ongoing training program with paramilitary troops in the northwest. It said the soldiers had traveled to Lower Dir to attend the inauguration ceremony for the girls' school. Pakistani and U.S. officials have condemned the attack. No American combat troops are officially stationed in Pakistan. U.S. aid initiatives in northwest Pakistan are aimed in part at strengthening paramilitary forces and improving local civilian governments to better counter Taliban and al Qaida influence in the region. On Tuesday, suspected U.S. drones fired missiles at several suspected militant hideouts in Pakistan's North Waziristan tribal region, killing at least 16 people. North Waziristan is known as a base for the Taliban-allied Haqqani group, which is blamed for cross-border attacks against U.S., NATO and Afghan troops in Afghanistan. U.S. officials do not publicly comment on the drone strikes, which have raised tensions between Pakistan and the United States in the past. Meanwhile, the death toll from four days of violence in Pakistan's southern port city of Karachi has reached at least 26, after at least six more people were killed Tuesday. The clashes appeared to be between activists from rival political parties - the Muttahida Qaumi Movement and the Awami National Party - which traditionally gather support from different ethnic groups.

"Russia, UK welcome Iran readiness for nuclear swap "

*Russia and Britain said Wednesday that they would welcome Iran's readiness to accept a proposal aimed at ending the standoff over its nuclear program as a "positive sign." "If Iran is ready to come back to the original agreement we can only welcome it," Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told reporters at a Wednesday news conference. The UK's Foreign Office said in a statement that "if Iran is willing to take up the IAEA's proposed offer, it would be a positive sign of their willingness to engage with the international community on nuclear issues." On Tuesday, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said that Tehran would welcome "honest nuclear cooperation with other countries, indicating that Iran was prepared to participate in a nuclear swap. "We have said that if you (the West) act honestly, we will cooperate with you, said the Iranian president. However, Ahmadinejad warned that if the other side failed to deliver the higher-enriched uranium based on the UN-drafted agreement, Iran would be left with no choice but to continue its enrichment program. Under a UN-brokered proposal, which was hammered out in Geneva in October, Iran would be required to send most of its domestically-produced low-enriched uranium abroad for further processing.
The other party would then be obliged to send the higher-enriched fuel back to Iran for use at the Tehran research reactor, which produces radioisotopes for medical purposes.

"MACKENZIE PHILLIPS SAYS SEXUAL RELATIONSHIP WITH DAD WAS NOT CONSENSUAL"

*Mackenzie Phillips now says her sexual relationship with her father was not consensual.
Mackenzie wrote about the incestuous relationship with John Philllips in the memor High on Arrival, and said that it had become consensual. On "The Joy Behar Show," which aired last night, Mackenzie corrected herself, saying, "I'd like to reframe my word, 'consensual.' As I was writing the book, I thought, this word, it kept sitting wrong with me, but I used it for lack of a better word, and since then I've been schooled by thousands of incest survivors all across the world that there really is no such thing as consensual incest due to the inherent power a parent has over a child. So, I wouldn't necessarily call it a consensual relationship at this time."

Health note:
"The Straight Hair Pill"
*Although natural styles have grown more mainstream over the years, hair straightening has and will likely always be a staple of the African-American community. Now instead of hours of pressing and relaxing, scientist claim you can get straight hair from a pill.
Researchers in Australia identified the trichohyalin gene as being mainly responsible for creating curls.
Professor Nick Martin, author of the research, says a variation in the gene determines the straightness or curliness of hair. Thus, it may be possible to come up with treatments to make hair straighter rather than relying on heated hair straighteners.
