Amun Ra’s Youth Performing ARTs Academy Opens Enrollment
4th Annual Camp runs June 1 – July 10th, 2009 on TSU’s Main Campus

NASHVILLE – (May 1, 2009)

For the fourth year in a row, Amun Ra Theatre is providing youth and parents an opportunity to explore their “Hidden Light,” by offering the latest incarnation of their highly reputed Youth Performing ARTs Academy. For parents who have those high energy, highly creative young people, this is the place to shape and mold their creativity.

Amun Ra Theatre's Performing ARTs Academy is that unique program with a curriculum designed to empower students through the performing arts. The day camp is open to youth ages 9-13. Participants will learn from professional actors, dancers and musicians in a safe, supervised environment in which they can engage in activities that encourage creative expression. The cost is $375.00 per child. The camp will be held in Crouch Hall on the main campus of Tennessee State University, located at 3500 John A. Merritt Boulevard.

The program runs June 1-July 10, 2009 from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, with a concentration of rigorous daily instruction in the areas of dance, drama, music, public speaking, creative writing and visual art.

"Our camp has virtually doubled each year in size since it’s inception,” said jeff obafemi carr, actor and founding artistic director of Amun Ra Theatre. "We believe what hooks parents into our concept is that we have people in each teaching area who are actually working professionals in their discipline. Our music teachers are both performers and writers; Our drama teachers have extensive performance resumes; You’ll see our art teachers’ works all over the city, and our guest speakers are people you see on Television and hear on the radio. We push our youth to achieve, and parents who put their kids in our program notice the upside because it’s reflected in their attitudes, their work, and yes, their grades in school.”

The camp is designed to teach young people self-esteem through the arts and how to express themselves in a positive way.

Enrollment is limited, and on a first-come, first-served basis. Applications are available now online at www.theamunratheatre.org.
