ST. LOUIS: Third Night of Riots Nets 80 Arrest

Police in riot gear confronted protesters in St. Louis for a third straight night after the acquittal of a white police officer who shot and killed a black man in 2011. The protest started out peacefully but then turned violent when demonstrators defied orders to leave and then began to smash windows and block traffic. More than 80 people were arrested and police confiscated weapons and bottles filled with an unknown liquid. St. Louis Mayor Lyda Krewson said the "vast majority of protesters were nonviolent" and blamed the unrest on a group of "agitators." Police expect more protests today. (NBC News) Talk About It: Former St. Louis cop Jason Stockley was acquitted of shooting black drug suspect Anthony Lamar Smith. Each day of protests started out peacefully and turned violent went smaller groups refused to disperse. Authorities are patient with demonstrations but have no tolerance for destruction of property and violence against officers.
