2# Jun 25-26 : Nappy Roots @12th & Porter
When: Fri., June 25, 9 p.m. and Sat., June 26, 9 p.m.
When we saw the listing for a two-night stand from these Kentucky-based rap stalwarts, we thought it had to be a typo, or some cruel joke on the part of Pollstar (they’re always tryin’ to fuck with us, swear to God). But after a cursory listen to their latest album, Pursuit of Nappyness, it’s pretty clear that this two-night stand is “for serious,” as the kids say. After 15 years in the rap game, Nappy Roots have covered a lot of territory, including “Po Folks,” the most humble rap hit of The Aughts — and if you remember correctly, The Aughts were about anything but being humble. Nappy Roots have a knack for staying contemporary — the new track “Be Alright” is slathered in club synths — without grasping at trends. They keep it more timeless than timely.
