Robin Thicke and Pharrell Williams will have to go to court to answer a lawsuit claiming they stole the core of the smash "Blurred Lines" from Motown great Marvin Gaye's "Got to Give It Up."
Thicke and Pharrell were asking for the Gaye estate's suit to be dismissed without a trial, but California judge John Kronstadt issued a judgment saying there's a "substantial similarity" between the two tunes -- and set the wheels in motion for what could be a significant hearing. The judge also mentioned Thicke's own comments about being obsessed with Gaye, and modeling himself after the late singer.
The ruling also allows a jury to examine the Gaye estate's claim that Thicke's "Love After War" borrows significantly from Marvin's "After the Dance."
A trial is set to begin on February 10th.
