Ray Nagin was given 10 years in federal prison today. The former mayor of New Orleans was convicted in February on 20 counts, most of those counts relating to kickbacks from contractors looking for city work after Hurricane Katina. Nagin was arrested in 2013 almost 3 years after his term as mayor of New Orleans. Along with cash kickbacks, Nagin also received cross-country trips, help with the family-run granite countertop company and the bribes.
Others that were involved in the corruption plead guilty and in turn testified against Nagin.
Nagin has denied everything in this trial. The wife of the former mayor had even written a letter to the judge asking for a delay in sentencing until Nagin's team was able to review all of the reports in the trial. All efforts to no avail.
