PETA is facing criticism concerning race again. The animal-rights group -- which angered black groups a few years back for its campaign equating the slaughter of animals to lynchings in the South -- recently premiered an ad in which a black woman takes off her clothes (in keeping with the group's "I'd Rather Go Naked Than Wear Fur" motto) in front of Congress. Media watchdog Womanist-Musings.com says, "Women in particular have been historically constructed as Jezebel. Our femininity is often soundly rejected, unless the goal is to paint us as sexually depraved."
PETA recently ran an ad featuring Michelle Obama, but the White House demanded that it be removed from PETA's website.
