Shortly after you are injured at work, your employer's workers' comp carrier will estimate your total medical bills and the amount of money they will need to pay you directly as a result of a permanent impairment they project you will sustain. THEY WILL NEVER REVEAL this number to you. These benefits are essentially yours to lose. If you're too scared to pursue your claim (as is your right under the applicable statute) or if you pursue it without a competent lawyer's assistance, with no knowledge of the formula by which your benefits should have been calculated, you will have probably cheated yourself out of thousands or at least hundreds of dollars.
