Nick Cannon has been in the spotlight ever since he admitted that he and his wife Mariah Carey are living separately. From Carey's suggestive lyric swap at a recent concert to Cannon covering up his "Mariah" tattoo, the couple's every move is under a microscope, and for Cannon, that's the biggest challenge of all.
"Public opinion is the harshest thing about it," Cannon told HuffPost Live's Ricky Camilleri on Wednesday.
The difficulty for Cannon is hearing outsiders dissect such a private matter, he said.
"Every family, every relationship, all these people go through things and they deal with it the way that they choose to deal with it. But to have someone judging the way you're dealing with your personal life is always like, 'Hey, that's a little harsh.' But I also know what I signed up for," he said.
The "America's Got Talent" host explained his approach for fielding that kind of media scrutiny.
"If someone asks me a question, I know how to answer it. If I have to say, 'At this time I'd rather not say that,' or misdirect, it is what it is," Cannon said. "But it's truly, at the end of the day, it's all about why these people feel or why the public feels like they need information and you have to tell them."
Cannon added that he understands that chasing details about his marriage are part of paparazzi photographers' livelihood, so he's learned to "respect" them but remain in control of how he interacts with them.
"I'm not Kanye. I'm not going to be wrestling at the airport. And I'm also not somebody who's gonna keep silent," he said.
