New York made history on Tuesday by becoming the first state to enact new gun control laws following December's Newtown, Connecticut school shootings. The new law, which is being called the nation's toughest, focuses on keeping fire arms out of the hands of the mentally ill.

After passing the state Senate 43-18 on Monday, the bill was passed by the state Assembly 104-43, and Governor Andrew Cuomo quickly signed it into law Tuesday. Minutes before signing, Cuomo said, "This unfortunately required tragedies and loss of life to actually spur the political process into action."
