Tax Day on Wednesday was the setting for one of the biggest and most visible protests advocating for raising the minimum wage.
Organizers of the "Fight for $15" movement say that the nationwide demonstrations marked a shift in the tenor of the conversation. Instead of focusing solely on fast-food workers, protests in 226 cities brought out adjunct professors, home-care professionals and even Walmart employees.
Former Secretary of Labor Robert Reich was among the demonstrators in Oakland, California -- persuading three McDonald's workers to leave their counter and join marchers.
There were no arrests, though a number of fast-food restaurants had to lock doors and serve only through their drive-through windows. (USA Today)
Say Whaaat?:
A person working full-time for minimum wage would fall below the federally defined poverty level. One of those numbers needs to be fixed.
It's actually pretty amazing how little someone can actually live on. That doesn't make it easy or fun, though.
These marches are starting to pick up steam. Walmart and McDonald's recently raised their starting salaries.
