Miguel, Tyrese Honored at Soul Train Awards in Las Vegas

Cedric The Entertainer hosted the annual Soul Train Awards Thursday night at the Planet Hollywood Casino in Las Vegas.

The show, which took over four hours to tape, was heavy on music and light on awards. Only six were announced, including the Lifetime Achievement Award for New Edition that fans already knew about. Their acceptance speech ran close to 30 minutes and will clearly need some serious editing for the TV broadcast.

There were plenty of musical performances, however. Highlights included New Edition, 2 Chainz, and a finale by Stevie Wonder. During Wonder’s medley, about a dozen of the performers and presenters who were still in the audience joined him on stage during “Signed, Sealed, Delivered.”

The entire evening also served as a tribute to Soul Train creator Don Cornelius, who died February 1 of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Cornelius’ son Tony made an appearance. Jody Watley teared up while discussing Cornelius’ love of dance during her introduction of the Soul Train dancers, while Stevie Wonder reminisced about the TV legend. A short video tribute was included in the show, and numerous clips of Cornelius were shown throughout the evening.

There were a few conspicuous absences. John Legend wasn’t there to accept his Songwriter of the Year award. and Gladys Knight failed to walk on stage for a segment with Tony Rock, Doug E Fresh and Michael Bivens -- despite being announced and included on the scripted teleprompter banter. The three gentlemen quickly left the stage and returned to shoot the scene from scratch. They ad-libbed the banter, but did give Knight a shout-out.

Here are the winners announced during the Soul Train Awards program. Other winners were reportedly announced off-stage but they weren't revealed to the audience:

Best Male R&B Soul Artist -- Miguel
Song of the Year -- Tyrese, “Stay”
Best Hip Hop Song of the Year -- 2 Chainz Featuring Drake, “No Lie”
Lifetime Achievement Award -- New Edition
Ashford and Simpson Songwriter of the Year -- John Legend
Best New Artist -- Elle Varner

You can watch the ceremony on BET and Centric on Sunday, November 25.
