Crowds of protesters gathered on the University of Virginia campus again yesterday calling for justice in the bloody arrest of black student Martese Johnson outside of a bar.
A criminal investigation has been opened into the details of the arrest and the amount of force used by police, which left him with cuts to his face and head. The entire incident was caught on camera. Police say Johnson was drunk and disorderly when he was arrested, a claim dismissed by his attorney and even a university official. He's been charged with public intoxication and obstruction of justice.
Johnson held a press conference yesterday and, through his attorney, read a statement saying, "I trust the scars on my face and head will one day heal, but the trauma of what those officers did will stay with me forever." He says he intends to fight the criminal charges against him "with the utmost vigor." (NBC News)
