Kudos to BET for the Dee Roberts Story...A Must See! BET gets it Right This Time!

I must admit that I am the BIGGEST BET BASHER. For years, I feel like BET has first numbed, then POISONED the black community with mindless "shake yo booty" videos and TV Gangsterism and additionally, BET has removed anything remotely uplifting and positive for Black Folk. Gone are shows like Teen Summit, Tavis Smiley, and BET News with Ed Gordon. I still hold you accountable BET to be more.

But today, I want to say Thank You. The movie American Violet (The Dee Roberts Story) was just flat out GOOD! I was in my living room in tears over this story...moreso because the backdrop took place during the Gore vs. Bush elections. Yet, the story felt like something from the 1950's. I was in tears over how much things HAVE NOT changed. How racism just takes a different place and condition, but Jim Crow and his subsequent offspring are alive and well in the South!

The movie was casted well. The acting was superb and conversely the overall product was above par. Kudos to BET Films for not showering me this afternoon with another film glorifying some Street Hustler in American Gangster. But showing me a story about the tragedy of simply being BLACK in the Rural South.

Finally, the film reminded me why I take a position against Black People lashing out at ALL white people about racism. Plenty of whites have stood shoulder to shoulder with us in the trenches to stamp out racism. Many of them have been called names, beaten, had their houses bombed, and even KILLED in defense of OUR human rights. Be careful who you "rattle your saber" at. It could be the one white person who would be your brother or sister in arms!
