Is Marriage Important In Black America Anymore?

Take a look at your friends, family and even yourself and you'll probably notice that more and more people are staying single as the average age of marriage continues to rise. Why is it that we aren't married or are at least worried about it?

Here are some possible reasons why:

  • We're inherently selfish. Most people are worried about getting themselves established before they get married. It's unlikely you will hear someone say, "I want to get marriage out of the way so I can focus on my career."
  • Fear of failure. 52 percent of all marriages end in divorce.
  • Most black men don't associate marriage and children with success. Most would tell you that success means education, careers, money in the bank and a nice car. Rarely would they anything involving a beautiful wife and kids

Kenny Asks:

  • Do you think marriage is still important to Black America? Why or why not?
  • How old are you? Are you married? What about your peers?
  • What is your definition of success? And why do you think most black men don't associate marriage and children with success?
