In an eerie coincidence, Tropical Storm Isaac is on track to hit New Orleans as a hurricane on Wednesday, the seventh anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, according to a computer model at the National Hurricane Center.
At 2 p.m. ET today (Sunday) New Orleans was put on hurricane watch. Three hours later that was upgraded to the more urgent hurricane warning, covering the Gulf Coast from Louisiana to the Florida Panhandle. Louisiana Mayor Bobby Jindal declared a state of emergency today and called for voluntary evacuations of some New Orleans parishes.
The storm hitting New Orleans is just one possible scenario. Other possibilities include the storm hitting farther east on the coasts of Mississippi or Alabama, which were also hit by Katrina. National Hurricane Center meteorologist James Franklin said that it will take another day or two to get a more accurate picture of where Isaac will hit.
