HIGHER EDUCATION: Harvard Accepts Record Number of Black Students

Harvard University set a record this year with the largest representation of blacks in the university's history.

Each year, the historic Ivy League university accepts about 2,000 students out of 34,000 applicants. With 170 new black students enrolled for the fall, the Journal of Blacks in Higher Education reveals that 12-percent of Harvard's class of 2018 will be black.

In March, theGrio reported on Avery Coffey, an African-American teen from Washington, D.C., had been accepted to five of the eight Ivy League institutions, including Harvard. When asked what he'd like to do with his degree, Coffey said, “I guess probably the CEO of an investment (or management consulting) firm. I guess pretty much overseeing acquisitions or transactions between large companies. Hopefully, Fortune 500 companies."
