I wanted to let you know about a recent story I wrote on how one local government official could get a hefty pension, even though he was recently driven out of office. And to make matters worse, this could happen where you live.
Former Nashville-Davidson County Criminal Court Clerk David Torrence is likely to receive an $80,000 a year pension, courtesy of taxpayers. This is despite the fact that he only worked three days a week and wasted more than $100,000 of taxpayer money.
Auditors are currently examining Torrence's records to search for evidence of malfeasance in office. Because of Davidson County's pension policy, Torrence could still receive his pension even if auditors find enough evidence to convict him of some wrongdoing. Counties across the state have different policies on the matter. Some are more protective of taxpayers, like Shelby and Knox Counties, where a conviction could prevent an elected official from receiving a pension.
