Critics Slam Controversial NYPD Stop-And-Kiss Program

New York City's new police chief is New York City's former police chief -- Bill Bratton.
Bratton, who served as Los Angeles' police chief after his first stint in New York, was tapped to return to his old job by Mayor-elect Bill de Blasio on Thursday.
The choice of Bratton is interesting, since de Blasio has made a point of promising to roll back New York's "stop and frisk" policy. Bratton is a proponent of program and even brought it to L.A. when he ran that city's police department between 2002 and 2009.
On Thursday, de Blasio backpedaled on his stance against "stop and frisk," comparing it to using chemotherapy to treat cancer. He said, "Used in the right does it can save lives. Used in the wrong dose, too heavy a dose, it can create its own dangers and problems, it can backfire."
But there is ccurrently a new NYPD program is stirring more controversy than the policy that it was designed to replace. The New York Police Department’s “Stop-and-Kiss” program is an effort to tamp down the complaints of the NYPD’s controversial Stop-and-frisk program that critics say targets black and Hispanic men.
Critics are calling the NYPD’s Stop-and-Kiss program a violation of privacy. Thousands took to the streets earlier this week to protest the new program. The new policy allows officers to kiss anyone who they believe looks suspicious.
New Yorkers who complain that they have been stopped and kissed say the new policy is even more intrusive than the Stop-and-frisk policy.
