Councilman Loniel Greene Shot In West Nashville

Metro councilman Loniel Greene, Jr. was taken to an area hospital after he was shot multiple times near a west Nashville gas station.

Officials with Metro police said Greene, councilman for District 1, was shot three times -- once in the elbow, shoulder, and chest.

The incident happened not far from a Marathon gas station on Oceola Avenue around 10 p.m.

According to police, Councilman Greene pulled up to the gas station and as surveillance cameras show, two young men were leaving.

Greene walked up to them at Burgess Avenue and Oceola Avenue. Minutes later, witnesses reported hearing several gunshots.

Greene walked back to his car and collapsed. The store clerk did not see him on the ground due to the gas pumps obstructing her view.  He was later found by another driver. 

Police arrived to find multiple shell casings along Oceola Avenue. At this hour, many questions remain unanswered.

“Councilman Green appeared to be on the exact same path following these two individuals. Some type of interaction happened on Oceola Avenue. What occurred is unknown at this point,” said Metro Police Spokesman Don Aaron.

Greene was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where he remains in stable condition.

Nashville Mayor Megan Barry released the following statement in response to the shooting: 

“Late last night, I visited Vanderbilt University Medical Center where Councilman Loniel Greene, Jr. was receiving treatment for wounds resulting from a shooting. I have been assured that the wounds are not life threatening and I am hoping and praying for a full and speedy recovery.

“I am confident that the Police Department is doing everything in their power to identify and capture the people responsible."
